Registering with a Local GP While Working Away

Temporary patient registration

NHS GPs accept temporary patient registrations for anyone staying in their catchment area for between 24 hours and 3 months. Bring photo ID, proof of UK address (your TNS booking confirmation works), and your NHS number if you know it.

Walk-in vs registration

For short stays (under a month), a walk-in centre or pharmacy First Contact service is usually faster than registering. For ongoing prescriptions or anything chronic, temporary registration is worth the 20 minutes of paperwork.

Out-of-hours and 111

111 works UK-wide and is the right call for anything non-life-threatening out of hours. For genuine emergencies, 999. Your registered home GP is unaffected by the temporary registration.
